Increasing Thefts of Plant Machinery

By Cliff

According to Alliance Insurance’s report on plant theft losses from January 2015 to February 2018, the theft of plant machinery from construction sites in the UK is on the rise. In the research, the eight items most often mentioned in claims were as follows:

  1. Tools
  2. Surveillance equipment
  3. Breakers
  4. Excavators/diggers
  5. Generators
  6. Rollers
  7. Wacker plats
  8. Pressure/power washers.

Heras fencing on building sites doesn’t always prevent thieves from unclipping or unbolting it. Highly visible CCTV cameras are still useful, but the images they provide are often not clear enough and cameras rarely cover an entire site.

Plant tagging is becoming increasingly popular with construction companies to track and locate stolen plant. However, some thieves have managed to detach the tags. Site access control systems range from turnstiles to ID card reader systems and provide another security option.

When buying plant, it’s increasingly important for construction companies to rigorously check Companies House records, the seller’s website, ID and credit ratings to help spot counterfeit paperwork. All plant should be registered with the Construction and Agricultural Equipment Security and Registration Scheme to help prevent losses.
